The story

Since Bangsbo's heyday in the 15th century, the area around the manor has been laid out as a garden, whether it has been as an herb garden with cabbage and spices, or sections with medicinal herbs, fruit trees and decorative flowers.

The gardens around Bangsbo have always been there and reflected the interest in gardens of the time, and in the 19th century Bangsbo was the idyllic place to which future poets made a pilgrimage to experience peace and tranquility. The gardens at Bangsbo have always undergone changes depending on which owner was in charge and which style was popular at the time.

The first real garden plan dates from 1812, and the garden is presented in a Renaissance-like layout with a central axis that runs slightly askew on the main building. In 1891, editor Johan Knudsen Bangsbo took over, and he set about cleaning up with a greater or lesser sense of reverence for the place and its history. The central aisle disappeared, and winding paths emerged around a stone mound to the south, and a pavilion to the north, while a white wooden bridge over the moat, based on drawings by Bindesbøll, connected the courtyard and the park.

After World War II, Frederikshavn Municipality became the owner of the manor and the adjacent areas, which now house the Bangsbo Botanical Garden.

The idea to create a botanical garden around Bangsbo was originally fostered by three garden-interested citizens who thought that the garden around the manor deserved to be more than just a lawn and some beds with seedlings.

Frederikshavn Municipality was presented with the concept at a municipal planning meeting and found the idea to be good, and this was the starting point for Bangsbo Botanical Garden, Frederikshavn.
